Workshop Description: As telehealth continues to be an integral part of mental health practice, clinicians must be prepared to deliver services that are ethical, legally compliant, and clinically effective. This one-hour NBCC continuing education workshop provides an overview of essential considerations for practicing telemental health, including HIPAA compliance, informed consent, privacy and security, technology preparation, jurisdictional issues, and risk management. Participants will explore practical strategies and practical examples for maintaining professional standards while adapting clinical care to virtual environments. The training is designed for counselors who provide or are preparing to provide telemental health services in a variety of clinical settings.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will be able to:

  1. Identify ethical, legal, and HIPAA requirements necessary to establish and maintain a secure, compliant telemental health practice.
  2. Explain best practices for informed consent, client privacy, technology security, and risk management in telehealth counseling.
  3. Apply professional standards related to telehealth practice, including jurisdiction, emergency planning, and clinical decision-making, to support safe and effective client care.

      Counselor Maya

      Maya Cook-Stroupe is a Licensed Professional Counselor specializing in treating anxiety and depression, providing evidence-based, client-centered care within a structured and supportive therapeutic environment. She utilizes an integrative approach incorporating techniques from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Gestalt Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Solution-Focused Therapy to tailor treatment to each client’s unique needs and goals. She holds a Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from the University of West Alabama, is licensed in Alabama, and currently provides counseling services to children, adolescents, and adults at Garrett Counseling.
