Program Content Description:

Time: 10:00 AM – 11:00 AM CST (Same time for both days)

Workshop Description:
This 2-hour training provides counselors with a practical, neurodiversity-affirming framework for understanding and working with autistic clients and their families. Participants will gain foundational knowledge of Autism Spectrum Disorder, including key features, common myths, sensory differences, and the concept of Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA), while also learning to differentiate autistic burnout from depression and understand its clinical implications. The training emphasizes the application of evidence-informed interventions to support autistic individuals in alignment with current best practices. Additionally, clinicians will explore the unique stressors experienced by parents of autistic children, recognize signs of caregiver burnout, and implement strategies and resources to support overall family functioning.

Learning Objectives:

By the end of this training, participants will be able to:

  • Describe core features of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), including common myths, sensory differences, and Pathological Demand Avoidance (PDA).
  • Differentiate autistic burnout from depression, including key clinical indicators and treatment implications.
  • Apply neurodiversity-affirming, evidence-informed interventions to support autistic clients in clinical practice.
  • Identify common stressors and signs of burnout in parents of autistic children and implement practical strategies and resources to support caregivers.
